Department of Biomedical Engineering of Near East University has been successfully represented at an International Conference in Sweden…

The Academic Members of the Department off Biomedical Engineering of Near East University jointly worked on 3 different projects which they presented at the International Workshops on Radiation Imaging Detectors 2018 held in Sweden.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin, Academic Members Musa Sani Musa and Berna Uzun presented their presentation on Simulation and Performance Evaluation of the High Performance Low Cost NEU – positron Emission Mammography (PEM) Device; Using Fuzzy Promethee Method based on multi-criteria decision-making theory for the evaluation of semi-conductive detectors; and The Simulation of New Scintillator Crystals for Brain Positron Emission Tomography Device.

“PEM Device has the capacity to detect lesions as small as 1mm in breast cancers”
Making the presentation on Simulation and Performance Evaluation of the High Performance Low Cost NEU – positron Emission Mammography (PEM) Device, Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin stated that their project was supported by Near East University Scientific Research /unit and jointly conducted with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and pointed out that the smallest lesions of 1mm could be detected in breast cancers. Furthermore, the project jointly carried out by Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin, Academic Member Musa Sani Musa involved designing a device with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School with a special technique which cost 10 times less than the PEM devices used normally for breast cancers. Additionally, since this device has a cylindrical geometrical shape it has the potential to provide imaging in a very short period of time.

The usage performanc.es of semi-conductive detectors in nuclear medicine imaging devices were discussed…
It was stated that the presentation made by Academic Members of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Near East University Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilber Uzun Özşahin, Musa Sani Musa and Berna Uzun who jointly worked on the project with Ajman University from the United Arab Emirates titled as Using Fuzzy Promethee Method based on multi-criteria decision-making theory for the evaluation of semi-conductive detectors attracted a lot of interest at the international conference held in Moscow.

Last but not least, the work of Assist. Prof. Dr. İlker Özşahin and Musa Sani Musa titled as ‘The Simulation of New Scintillator Crystals for Brain Positron Emission Tomography Device’ was presented at International Workshops on Radiation Imaging Detectors 2018 and emphasised how it was highly necessary to renew and update the positron emission device since it was one of the most significant devise used in the filed of nuclear medicine imaging. GATE simulation was used for medical imaging and a comparison of the scintillation crystals currently used and scintillation crystals newly developed were compared.

It was proudly emphasised that the aforementioned three projects which were presented at the international conference will be published in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) journals shortly.
